About
Soulo is my public portfolio.
Its a place where ideas become products, tools, communities, and experiments.
I'm an environmental and sustainability professional with over eight years' experience across biodiversity, compliance, and fieldwork. But my work doesn't stop there. Soulo brings together everything I'm building across commercial ventures, community projects, applied research, and emerging ideas.
Current projects include Strangers Collective - an ethical homewares brand, Evlytics - my sustainability consultancy, Nil Pil - New Zealand's first open label placebo, Slowde - a slow fashion initiative, SoloWAMS - a support network for solo mothers, and various R&D concepts in progress.
Through Soulo Originals I test circular economy principles in practice, designing small-batch products from reclaimed and natural materials, taken from concept through to making, selling, and iteration at real markets.
This site documents what I'm building, testing, and learning as ideas move into practice.
Projects
Work that is live or in active development.
Some are solo projects, others co-organised/founded. These projects have external users, stakeholders, or customers, and are being built to operate in the real world.
Experimental work and early-stage explorations are documented separately.
nil pil
Nil Pil — New Zealand's first purpose-built open label placebo.Nil Pil is an inert capsule containing only microcrystalline cellulose.
It has no active ingredients, no known drug interactions, and no side effects at recommended doses. It is clearly labelled as a placebo.Open label placebo research has been published in peer reviewed journals including Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) and PAIN, the journal of the International Association for the Study of Pain. The research shows that placebo effects can occur even when the recipient knows the pill contains no active ingredient.
No Wellness Tax - just accessible tools that work.
What it contains
Microcrystalline cellulose. That's it.
What it won't do
Make you smarter. That's not how effort works.
Make you younger. That's not how time works.
Make you rich. That's not how money works.
Cure serious illness. See a doctor.
What it might do
That depends on you.Use Cases:Personal Behavioural or Pain Management
A pill that contains nothing, for people who know it contains nothing, that works anyway.
New Zealand's first open label placebo. It does what you want it to do. That's not a claim. That's how placebos work.Care Homes
Care staff regularly encounter situations where a resident with memory impairment believes they haven't taken their medication, or who needs the reassurance of taking a pill when additional medication isn't clinically appropriate. It can sometimes lead to stress, aggression and accidental overdoses. Some facilities use informal workarounds, Nil Pil offers something better, a properly manufactured, correctly labelled product with a documented research base, supplied with full transparency.Children
Parents are sometimes looking for something inert and safe when children experience minor ailments or the general sense that something is wrong. Open label placebo research has explored use in children in these contexts. Nilpil contains only microcrystalline cellulose. No active ingredients, no known interactions, clearly labelled.www.nilpil.com

VEGi - Vegetation Intelligence
If you've ever stood in a wetland plot arguing with a colleague about whether that Juncus cover is 10% or 15%, you'll understand immediately why VEGi exists.
Vegetation assessment is one of the most time-consuming parts of wetland ecology work — and one of the most inconsistently done. Ecologists are highly trained professionals spending significant field time on tasks that are essentially counting and maths. Then they go back to the office and do it all again in a spreadsheet. The margin for human error is real, and in wetland assessments, misclassifying a single species can change the outcome of an entire report.
VEGi was designed to take the mechanical parts of that process off ecologists' plates. Using high-resolution cameras and machine vision algorithms, the system identifies and classifies plant species within a plot, calculates percentage cover, and connects automatically to wetland indicator status lists — so the data that drives the assessment is generated accurately and consistently, every time.
The ecologist doesn't disappear from the process. Machine vision isn't perfect, particularly when a plot is dense or species identification requires experience at a finer level than genus. VEGi is designed for the ecologist to review, correct, and make the calls that require genuine expertise — while the system handles the rest.
The result is faster field time, cleaner data, and reports that are easier to defend.
VEGi was shortlisted for Creative HQ's Impact Accelerator Environment Track in 2023, supported by the Ministry for the Environment and BECA. It remains an active concept, with prototype development contingent on funding and developer partnership.
Made By Truth
Made by truth is a website that doesn't sell any products. It exists to display the true cost of fast fashion items to workers, society and the environment.
It was built using Lovable AI and is currently in beta while source citations are being verified.
You're welcome to explore the site, all sources are listed so you can review them directly.
If you're interested in jumping on the slow fashion merry-go-round, check out what we're doing at Slowde.
Slowde is building local solutions to keep clothing and textiles out of landfill and out of overseas processing chains where the true cost is paid by others.
Lake Pano Project
Lake Panorama is a gorgeous urban green space in Auckland, NZ that needs some major TLC!
We aren't only about working bees and volunteering. LPP is about connection - with events and activities for all to enjoy.

Exploratory work, prototypes, and early-stage ideas.
These are projects without fixed outcomes, used to test assumptions, tools, or approaches.
Some experiments may become projects. Others exist only to generate learning.
Leafline is a concept for a smart, user-friendly app that helps gardeners, landscapers, and restoration practitioners plan planting projects with confidence.
By using plant phenology, the timing of seasonal plant events, it suggests species, combinations, and planting layouts tailored to your site, goals, and climate, making it easier to achieve year-round colour, biodiversity, or ecological restoration outcomes.
BS Detector is a concept for a smart, user-friendly app that helps shoppers make informed choices in-store. By scanning product barcodes, it uses AI to compare marketing claims, like “high in vitamin C” or “sustainably sourced”, against verified ingredient lists, certifications, and public data, instantly flagging unsupported claims and highlighting inconsistencies. This lets users shop confidently, separating hype from fact. Future updates could add a full product comparison mode based on personalised criteria like price, nutrition, or sustainability.

Made by Truth
VEGi - Vegetation Intelligence
A concept app for ecological consultants that uses machine vision to identify and classify plant species within vegetation plots. Designed to reduce time spent on manual species tallying and percentage cover calculations, the parts of wetland assessment most prone to human inconsistency, while keeping ecologists in control of the decisions that require expertise. Integrates with wetland indicator status lists and GIS tools to streamline the full assessment and reporting workflow.
Shortlisted for Creative HQ's Impact Accelerator Environment Track (2023).
